A Vision Takes Root: The Legacy of Bishop Robertson
Just as a mighty oak becomes the heart of a village square, providing shade and sanctuary for generations, the Marvin Williams Recreation Center stands in West Bremerton as our gathering place, its branches of service reaching out to nurture and shelter all who seek to learn, grow, and connect.
This vision began with Bishop Larry Robertson, who saw beyond what was to what could be. While walking through the neighborhood in 2005, connecting with residents during a school bond campaign, Bishop Robertson witnessed both the challenges and untapped potential of West Bremerton. From this experience grew a dream: to create a space where everyone, especially young people, could find inspiration, support, and opportunity.
Through unwavering faith and remarkable persistence, Bishop Robertson united the community behind this vision. Starting from humble beginnings - much like his first church where an ottoman served as his pulpit - he spent over a decade bringing together partners, securing funding, and building support for what would become a $7.2 million beacon of hope for the community. Former Bremerton Mayor Greg Wheeler described him as "a unifier" who demonstrated how vision, passion, and the ability to bring people together could achieve something truly magnificent.

Growing Together: A Place for Everyone
Our 20,000 square-foot facility serves as a vibrant hub of activity and growth. From our professional-grade gymnasium and commercial teaching kitchen to our modern meeting spaces and technology-equipped classrooms, every area is designed to foster connection and opportunity.
The Center's programs reflect our commitment to holistic community development. Through youth athletics, STEM education, workforce training, and summer camps, we nurture both young minds and bodies while supporting working families. Under the leadership of Dr. Lillian Lockett Robertson, we continue to evolve while staying true to our founding vision.
Like the deep roots of a mighty tree, we remain firmly planted in our commitment to serve and unite our community. Whether you're here for a basketball game, a cooking class, or simply to connect with neighbors, you're part of something special - a living legacy that strengthens our community, one person at a time. We invite you to become part of our story and grow stronger together.
